Citizen Journalism: is it good?

i really didn’t question it until i began watching footage on LiveLeak.com.

they had some footage form the Virginia Tech Shootings, shot on a Nokia N70. While you couldn’t really see anything, it still felt too voyeuristic, too raw. Like I shouldn’t be watching it. I am not recommending you watch it, or seek it out. This only to say that I felt, for the first time, that this kind of video should have its limits.

That is the process of passive indoctrination. Put the idea in the air. Wait for something to hit. The idea will eventually stick.

What’s the alternative? I’m encountering this moral dilemma in the vlogosphere for the first time. I did find some interesting video footage on the site from Alive in Baghdad:

Testing out pando

Pando is like YouSendIt, but with P2P bend to it. It’s good for video sharing, and distributing iTV (internet television). Here are two “packages” I uploaded as a test:

Stock Footage Available for Online Editing

this is not really big news. Archive.org has had stock footage available online for a long time. They even have it available in hi-res.

But, since I’ve been using jumpcut, I thought i’d post this…

taken from a set or group or whatever called stock footage.

A Video for my friend Rob

happy birthday rob !

some tech specs: this was shot on a kodak 7590 at 12 frames per second. i uploaded the individual clips to jumpcut and did all the editing there.

if you’d like, you can actually go in and make your own individual edits and remixes of this video (and even add your own music).

to embed on your own webpage, use this code:
<embed src="http://jumpcut.com/media/flash/jump.swf?id=5AC15CC6DE1E11DBBF98000423CF385C&asset_type=movie&asset_id=5AC15CC6DE1E11DBBF98000423CF385C&eb=1" width="408" height="324" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed>

More Online Video Editing Sites

online video editing is now a reality. what’s the big deal?

video editing iconsWell, I recently wrote a post on Jumpcut (an online video editing site). While I definitely enjoy using it, there are definitely a few other services out there.

THIS ARTICLE and THIS ARTICLE give a nice review of the other options (including the newest option, Cuts). These are great reviews of all the options available (right now) and what they offer.

In a summary:

Jumpcut currently offer the most feature rich and best online video editing application with Photobucket’s Adobe powered option coming in a close second. Eyespot also offers similar features but in a simplified fashion and is the only site that offered the ability to download an edited video – this makes it easier to put edited videos on other popular video sites.

I’m really glad someone else did this. I now know what to look for when doing my own comparison. As a side note, I think online video editing will allow people to create new kinds of media – new methods of creation allow new modes of communication. While this may be quick and dirty (and not “professional editing”) it really facilitates video blogging and easy uploads + compressions. These online tools make Compressor, the software, kind of pointless.

Romeo + Juliet: the iTV Way

R&J Logo

This is a pretty dramatic look at the NYC Ballet’s production of Rome and Juliet.
It looks like the videos are put together by one of the dancers, who gives us a behind the scenes look at the production.

It’s an amazing site and a nice design of an online video diary.
