Some of you may know – I work as the New Media Coordinator for Misnomer Dance. This December we submitted an idea to IdeaBlob for a chance to win $10k.

And we won! The idea is to essentially build an online theater. I’m particularly interested in utilizing open-source standards to help arts organizations.

On Monday, January 14th, IdeaBlob hosted a reception in NYC to honor current and past IdeaBlob winners. The reception was held after Misnomer’s showcase at Alvin Ailey.

Check out the official winning announcement.

We’ll definitely be looking into partnering with Operator11 or something similar to help us build out our project. If you’re interested in helping out with this project, or just interested in finding out more about the idea and how we plan to build it out, definitely contact me!

As lots of videoBloggers know, YouTube is great because of the large audience. However, the quality lacks, and users can’t download any of your videos directly from the site.
(You can however use a service called DownloadYouTubeVideos to do this – but the quality is still poor)

What else is out there? I’ve briefly reviewed some good video solutions that I personally use. If you see something missing, or have a question, please let me know + leave a comment. My goal is to compile a comprehensive resource for content producers, hosts, designers, and curators of video content. Hope this list helps!

Vimeo
Great for programmers, developers, bloggers, and others who want their videos downloadable. Nice design + social networking capabilities. The nicest feature I like is the friend updates. Whenever a friend of yours leaves a comment, or gives some ‘net love to another video, you’ll see the instant feedback on your account. Good way to discover new video.

BrightCove
A Great solution for internet television, but not so great for video bloggers. Allows you to create your own custom channel. Here’s an example.

Another great feature is the customizable upload forms. You can create these custom upload forms and embed the form into your site. This way, visitors can upload videos to your custom channel without leaving your webpage.

BrightCove offers desktop software to help you manage your online media. Part of the software includes a batch uploader which allows you to upload multiple files at once.

Revver
Revver is also popular but I do not use it. They allow visitors to download video, but I don’t really know enough about Revver to be writing about it.

Blip.Tv
Blip.Tv is probably one of my favorites. They offer visitors and content producers high quality video, downloadable content, and the ability to create iTunes podcasts. They also offer content producers the ability to create a custom channel. Here is an example I created a while back.

Blip.Tv helps your content go beyond the web. The site helps you convert your videos for viewing on cell phones, video iPods, and many other formats.

Like Brightcove, Blip.Tv also offers a batch uploader, so you can upload many files at once, saving content producers and publishers LOTS of time.

I’ve embedded a video to give you a taste of the quality :

Pando
What if you just want to send video back and forth without hosting it publicly?
Use Pando. Pando allows you to send 1GB files & folders via any email or IM.
Think of it like YouSendIt, but for video and way cooler.

Is taking a picture of yourself everyday for 8, 10, or 20 years really becoming a discipline or a genre? As we know, the true litmus test for these kinds of things is The Simpsons, our cultural barometer.

Karl Baden teaches photography at Boston College, and has been taking his own photo for 20 years. He says “the idea, basically, is to take all the variables, except one [the passage of time], and turn them into constants…I try not to change physically. I don’t grow a mustache or beard. I pretty much cut my hair the same way.” However, his project is a photo installation, not a video.

Since Ahree Lee posted her video on YouTube, we have seen a growing trend of self-portrait movies, or video portraits. Artists, voyeurs, self-obsessed, or simply curious, people are taking pictures of themselves simply because they can.

While not a self-portrait, Luke Dubois’ awesome video piece, Playboy, depicts change over time in a more dramatic fashion. He shows different playboy models over a span of 50 year. Using max/msp, he manages to place their eyes in the same place, much like Lee does.

Related Links:
A New York Times article on this trend includes links to other artists and shows working with this idea

Noah Kalina’s blog – the artist The Simpsons parodied.
The music in the piece is by Carly Comando, which Simpsons producers did not compensate. Sounds like a case of copy-WRONG to me.

The original video that was parodied on YouTube.

John Keller, another “video portrait artist” includes a list of similar projects on his site. John has photographed himself for 8 years, 2 more than Noah and 6 more than Lee.

As of this writing, these projects are still works in progress.

i’ll be riding 55 miles among riders who are doing up to 100 miles in one day. i’ve been inspired by the work Robert Moon, Gian Pablo, and myself have been working on, so i’ve decided to Mount a video camera on the back of my bike.

I got the idea from a conversation Moon and I had, so I looked up how to do it:
http://www.instructables.com/id/ELVYTU8WHREP2860C6/

Overall, my own setup is fairly simple and straightforward. I’m using a combo of bungee cords, towels, cardboard, and ziploc bags.

For progress reports, i’ll be updating throughout the day on my flickr feed.

Until then, buenas noches, bithez.
